Michigan Merit Award/Michigan Promise Scholarship

This program, provided by the state of Michigan, begins with the high school graduating class of 2000 and offers up to a $4,000 scholarship. Dorsey School Scholarships & Grants

Memorial Scholarships
Dorsey Schools awards memorial scholarships to high school graduates each year. Graduates must complete a high school Scholarship Application and meet its requirements. Graduates must also provide a letter of recommendation and an application essay with the completed scholarship application. Awards made for each of the two memorial scholarship programs are below.

Dorsey High School Scholarship Event
Dorsey Schools have 6 scholarships available to 2009 High School Graduates:

RUTH DORSEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is offered in memory of Ruth Dorsey, founder of Dorsey Schools. The Dorsey schools shall award one (1) full scholarship, with a maximum value of $12,000 for any Career Training Program of his/her choice as described in the Dorsey Schools Catalog (full-scholarship after application of Federal Pell Grant).

KAREN CORTIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is offered in memory of Karen Cortis, a long-time Director of Education at Dorsey Schools. One Half-Scholarship per campus will be awarded with a maximum value of $6,000 for any Career Training Program of his/her choice as described in the Dorsey Schools Catalog. (Half-scholarship after application of Federal Pell Grant.)

Application Requirements
To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be scheduled to graduate any time during 2009
  • Possess a minimum cumulative academic grade point average of 2.0 through their Junior and Senior years
  • Complete a Scholarship application, signed by a Dorsey School representative, accompanied by a copy of your High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Provide evidence of acceptance to a Dorsey School Career Training Program and attend a scholarship event by September 30, 2009

A maximum of one scholarship may be awarded to any one applicant. Recipients of scholarships must commence training before January 4th, 2010.

MILITARY AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS
Dorsey Schools will offer two (2) annual scholarships per campus to any active duty member or honorably discharged veteran of any United States military service branch for attendance at that campus.  The value of this scholarship is $1,000, and awards will be made by the Dorsey Scholarship Committee.  The purpose of the Military Award Scholarship is to help those with military service receive a career education and make the transition from military to civilian life. (Scholarships will be awarded on a quarterly basis, one scholarship per student.)

DORSEY SCHOOLS MICHIGAN WORKS! GRANT
The Dorsey Schools Michigan Works! Grant is available to students enrolled in any 24, 36 or 48 credit hour program with the exception of Patient Care Technician.

The grant is awarded based on the following:

  • The student must be approved for training by a Michigan Works! Agency.
  • The student must be Pell eligible per U.S. Department of Education definition.
  • The student must be enrolled in and actively attending classes at the time the Pell Grant notification is provided to the school.

DORSEY SCHOOL GRANT
The Dorsey Schools also offer a private Grant to eligible students with a maximum grant award of $750! Please inquire about this grant at our next open house.

Federal Student Loans and Grants

FEDERAL PELL GRANT
The Pell Grant does not require repayment. Eligibility is based on a student’s educational financial need with a maximum award of $4,731 per year.

FEDERAL STAFFORD LOAN
The Federal Stafford Loan may be obtained through participating lending institutions. If eligible, DEPENDENT STUDENTS may borrow up to a maximum of $5,500 to apply to their training. INDEPENDENT STUDENTS (self-supporting) may borrow up to a maximum of $9,500 per year to apply to educational costs. The Federal Stafford Loan is repaid in monthly installments, with interest, starting six months after your last day of attendance.

FEDERAL PLUS LOAN (PLUS)
The "PLUS" loan is available to parents in assisting dependents with the cost of education. The maximum loan is the student’s cost of attendance, less other financial aid. A "PLUS" loan may be obtained through participating lenders. Repayment of this loan begins within 30 days of issuance and is repaid with interest.

Other Opportunities for Financial Assistance

TUITION FINANCING
You may also finance tuition through a participating lender. For more information, contact our Admissions Office.

WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT (WIA)
If you are "unemployed" or "underemployed," you may be eligible to receive a training fund voucher (ITA) to reduce your educational costs. For information, contact a Dorsey School for directions to your local Workforce Development Board.

VETERAN'S (VA) BENEFITS
All Dorsey Schools are approved to accept students eligible to receive Veteran's Administration Educational Benefits (with the exception of Farmington Hills).

UAW TUITION ASSISTANCE
Dorsey Schools are nationally accredited and are approved to participate in tuition assistance and scholarship programs provided by UAW-Chrysler, UAW-Ford and UAW-GM for employees, retirees, and their eligible dependent children. Contact your union local to determine your eligibility.
